Tambuah Mas Indonesian Restaurant, Paragon

"Tambuah Mas" means "to add more, server". Which was exactly what my friend and I did for dinner one Wednesday evening. We kept asking for refills of iced water to douse the spiciness of the food.

Shang likes spicy food, so I brought him to one of Singapore's oldest Indonesian restaurants for some traditional homestyle food.

They first served us Belinjau Crackers and Peanuts ($2.00)

These crackers, together with the Sambal ($1.50), was an explosion of spice and flavour in the mouth. The sambal chili doesn't look dangerous, but it is. We had several refills of iced water here. You have been forewarned.

Before we were done with the crackers, the main dishes came in quick succession. The Soto Ayam, or chicken soup ($4.90) is one of the better versions I've tried. It was Indonesian-style comfort food that warmed your insides, hearty chicken broth with shredded chicken, bean sprouts (which I asked to be removed) and a fried potato croquette.

It was chock full of shredded chicken.

A closer look at the potato croquette. This had chopped coriander (urgh) inside, I took one bite and gave it to Shang.

Sayur Lodeh ($6), a medley of cabbage, long beans, fried cubed firm beancurd simmered in spicy coconut milk. This was yummy. It wasn't very spicy (I liked that, but Shang didn't), but you can add in the sambal to spice things up.

Tauhu Telor ($7), a tower of fried cubed beancurd coated with battered eggs and dosed with spicy sweet dark sauce. This was fresh, spicy, sweet and savoury at the same time.

Ayam Goreng Istimewa ($10), traditional fried chicken accented with crispy golden spice blend. We both didn't really like this, it was too dry and tough. I guess it's difficult to get juicy deep fried chicken.

The bill was $37.65, inclusive of towels at $0.30 each. Reasonably affordable in my view.
