Sushi Tei, Raffles City Shopping Centre

I love meeting up with Lips, she's such a wonderful conversationalist and we always have a million and one things to talk about. We both were feeling a little bloated so we decided to have some Japanese food at Sushi Tei. Japanese cuisine is characterised by its clean and clear flavours because the focus is on the freshness of the ingredients, so you don't really feel like you're eating much.

Sushi Tei is probably the best Japanese restaurant in its category of authentic, affordable and value-for-money Japanese cuisine. Compared to its competitors, this chain of Japanese restaurants offers the best quality for your buck.

The Salmon Sashimi ($7) is fresh, rightfully chilled and sliced thickly, the natural sweetness of the salmon coming through every bite.

Lips likes the Nokkemori ($18) with Salmon Roe, Raw Scallop, Sea Urchin and Minced Tuna on Cucumber Maki. All were fresh and sweet.

I love fish that's half broiled or seared, where you get a nicely grilled crust and soft mushy insides. I got the Aburi Salmon Belly ($3.20), expecting to be wowed, but it turned out a tad boring. It just tasted a little one-dimensional and flat.

The Soft Shell Crab Maki ($6.50) is one of my favourite makis here. The crisp soft shell crab, the moist sushi rice, the seaweed and the fish roe were a nice balance of flavours and textures.

We girls need our greens for fibre and nutrients, so we got the Yasai Itame ($5) pan fried mixed vegetables. Simple sauteed fare, not too oily or salty.

I got my periennial fave, the Cha Soba ($7) green tea buckwheat noodles served chilled, slurpy and refreshing.

I like nibbling on the Hanasaki Ika Tempura ($5.50) squid tempura. Bouncy, crispy and fragrant.

Halfway through dinner, Ernie called unexpectedly to "ask" if he could gatecrash our girls-only dinner. We'd almost finished our food so he got right down to ordering his Yakiniku Don ($11) of pan fried beef on rice. The beef was tender and juicy, with a hint of yakitori seasoning adding sweetness to the full-bodied red meat.

As usual, Ernie needed his deep-fried fare, Ebi Tempura ($11) prawn tempura which was juicy and crispy. For deep fried food, this was incredibly light.

Actually, Ichiban Sushi at Esplanade is another place with comparative pricing that I'd eat at, just stick to the more unusual sushi, like the lobster mayo sushi and spicy tuna mayo sushi. Their cooked stuff are also not bad. Stay away from the traditionally Japanese sushi.
