Nan Hwa Chong Fish-Head Steamboat Corner

I've mentioned before that the cze char fare at this steamboat place is really quite yummy. Nan Hwa Chong serves up a small selection of cze char dishes to supplement its mainstay fish-head steamboat. I like that they somehow put their own spin to the classic local dishes.  

The Butter Sotong ($12) is a localised version of Italian calamari. There's a faint sugary edge to the butter undertones of the batter, which is lifted by the fragrant crisp curry leaves, while the squid is tender and soft. 


I also love the Black Pepper Diced Chicken ($10), heady, aromatic and succulent, even if it was a tad oily. Sliced red chilis and curry leaves lend a sweet heat to the dish.


The Onion Omelette ($8) is a fluffy creation of sweet caramelized onions and scrambled eggs.


Of course we got the Red Snapper Fish Steamboat ($28), sans seaweed (which the BF dislikes) and garland chrysanthemum (which I don't like). I love the slurpworthy soup, rich, sweet and with depth of flavour from hours of simmering fish bones and fried sole, and without the yucky artificial sweetness and milky film of condensed milk that some other steamboat places use to sweeten their soup bases.

Hi I was searching the street directory for the location of this place, then realised that the address should be 814, not 81 :-)
