Soup Broth Asia, Raffles City Shopping Centre

The opening of the shopping link between Raffles City Shopping Centre and Esplanade MRT station has heralded a slew of new eateries in the basement of Raffles City. I recently had lunch with Ang there, and we were just spoilt for choice. I mean, there's practically a restaurant for every single craving and tastebud.

One of the newly opened restaurants is Soup Broth Asia, an offshoot of the very popular-with-women-and-the-health-conscious Soup Spoon. The Soup Spoon franchise is apparently so hugely successful that it's decided to venture into local classics. Where the Soup Spoon serves western-style stews and thick cream-based soups, Soup Broth Asia focuses on herbal concoctions and double-boiled clear soups, Asian favourites.

I got the Hainanese Fish Maw Soup ($10.20), choc-a-bloc with sliced fish, carrots, white fungus, mushrooms, and cabbage. The soup was very delectable, delicate and light, yet full-bodied and with depth. This was pure comfort food.

Ang got the Salted Vegetable and Duck Soup ($9.60), a Peranakan classic also known as itek tim. The duck was perfectly fork-tender, it's obviously been simmered for hours. Tomatoes lent a tangy sweetness to the otherwise one-dimensional salty and rich soup. The soft and smooth beancurd complemented the salty overtones of the preserved vegetable with its plain and clear flavour.

A choice of plain white rice or Yam Rice (additional $1) is provided as a side to any order of a soup. This was nicely fluffy and well-flavoured.

The Prof says : I was there in mid Dec and tried the beef hotpot. It was the most watery excuse of a soup I have evar tasted. DO NOT even bother to try that particular one.

Prof says - having bulgolgi turkey for Christmas is like selling Kim Jong Il magnets in Seoul. Some things are just too sacrilegeous (Bunny - pls spell check before posting, kamsia)
