Angelo's Restaurant & Bar

Angelo's is the brainchild of Angelo Sanelli, the man behind award-winning Italian restaurants, Michelangelo's, Sistina, Zambuca, and Mediterranean vegetarian restaurant Original Sin. Located along Killiney Road, and walking distance from vibrant Orchard Road, Angelo's exudes a homely, intimate and cosy vibe.

The food is classically Italian, with an Australian influence so the focus is on fresh ingredients and the simplest of cooking techniques. Prices are what you'd expect of a semi-fine dining restaurant, reasonable and value-for-money. FYI, payment by Amex cards gets you a good 20% discount off your bill.

We started off with the Portobello Mushrooms ($20), grilled then stuffed with an assortment of shimeiji, button and forest mushrooms and crumbled blue cheese, with melted parmesan, and set atop a bed of arugula leaves. This was a nice balance of flavours and textures, with the juicy earthy mushrooms, powdery pungent blue cheese, and bitter crunchy arugula.

The Porcini Ravioli ($26), stuffed with mild ricotta and porcini mushrooms, was unexpectedly generously portioned. Slather in a creamy forest mushroom, white truffle oil and black summer truffles puree sauce, and you get a very filling dish.

The only disappointing dish of the otherwise good meal was the Spaghetti with Garlic Prawn and Spinach ($26). The garlic and white wine cream sauce was too rich (due to the heavy cream base) and plain (lacking in flavour). The sauce tasted of just plain cream. This would have been better if it was done aglio olio style.

Update 6 June 2011: Angelo's has closed its doors and given way to some Australian steak place.
