Roszy's Tiffin House

It's easy to walk by and miss Roszy's Tiffin House. This nondescript eatery is tucked in a little nook behind and away from the main road that is Thomson Road, so you really have to be looking for this place to find it. Even if you do happen to chance upon this halal family-run eatery, it looks like a traditional English pub with its heavy use of dark wood paneling, and you really couldn't be blamed if you thought that this can't possibly be a halal place with nasi padang fare. I suppose that's why the eatery was barely filled although I was there during the peak lunch hour. However, this place is quite popular with people in the know, and according to the grapevine, a few of our government leaders cater from this place. If it's good enough for our leaders, it's good enough for us, I say.

The dishes were pretty alright, packed with flavour and Malay spices without being too spicy. A great place to introduce newbies to the spicy flavours of Indonesian/Malay cuisine (I hear that visiting diplomats are brought here by government officials for a lunchtime treat). The menu's a little limited but they do fairly authentic fare, with portions that were a tad pricer than the nasi padang eateries along Kandahar Street but still considered cheap.

The Sop Buntut ($6.90) traditional oxtail soup, was one of the better ones I've tried. The strong accent of cinnamon, cloves and pepper flavoured the soup while root vegetables like carrots lent sweetness and the chunks of oxtail were stewed till fork tender.


The Ayam Masak Merah ($6.50) red chicken curry utilised dried red chillis for a subtle smoky heat, and tomato sauce for a tart-ish sweetness in the gravy slathered over a succulent chicken thigh. Flavoursome but not too spicy. Great for people who like strong flavours but can't take the heat.


The Sambal Goreng ($6) with beancurd, tempe and prawns in a pounded chilli and dried shrimp spice paste was also a lightly spiced dish. Prawns were small but fresh and the tempe soy cakes balanced out the chilli pasta with its mild flavours.

Queensway Shopping Centre , where locals flock to for all things sports and optical-related, is also known for good laksa. There are 2 laksa stalls, within a stone's throw of each other, both claiming to serve up the best. Both tout to be affiliates of world-famous Katong ones, and the accolades, writeups and publicity plastered all the utilitarian facades will attest to the fierce competition. 싱가포르에 호커 센터 중에서 에이비씨 브릭워케 호커 센터를 우리가 제일 좋아해요. 실제로 싱가포르에서 가장 크고 유명한 호커 센터 중 하나예요. 가끔 외국인 여행자들이 이 호커 센터에서 식사하고 관광도 해요.  호커 음식은 내가 우리 나라 싱가포르에서 제일 사랑하는 것이에요. 호커 푸드는 내 컴포트 푸드여서 내 마음에 들어와요. 음식도 싸고 맛있고 종류도 많아요. 해외여행 가면 그리운 음식이 호커푸드인데 싱가포르에 돌아와서 가장 먼저 먹는 음식이 박초미예요.  박초미은 아마도 내가 제일 좋아하는 호커푸드예요. 나는 식초맛을 좋아하고 버섯볶음이 제일 맛있고 용기가 제일 맛있어요.   =========================   ABC Brickworks is one of the more well-known, and beloved, hawker centres in SG. Gong Yuan Ma La Tang

C'est la saison de la soupe. Meme si on n'a pas les quarte saisons à Singapour, le temps devient "pas aussi chaud" vers la fin de l'année; c'est cette période que j'ai envie de soupes et de ragoûts...ils sont très très réconfortants!  Dans d'autres nouvelles, les lumières et décorations de Noël à Rue Orchard sont allumées!! Je ne suis pas sûr pourquoi, mais voir les lumières de Noël me rend toujours heureux. Je pense, c'est peut-être parce que les lumières de Noël signifient l'approche de Noël, ma saison préférée de tous. Même si on ne fête pas Noël pour des raisons religieuses, c'est toujours le temps de la gentillesse et l'amour, toutes les qualités que j'apprécie et chérit.
