Crystal Jade Golden Palace

We met up with all of my siblings for dinner at Crystal Jade Golden Palace. I usually see the boys at least once a month, but because my sister lives in Germany and comes back once a year to satisfy all of her Singaporean food cravings, she misses out on our monthly gatherings and only gets to meet up with us once a year.

Growing up, I've always been painfully aware that my family was considered large. In a time where the 2-is-enough policy was evidently in full force, a family with 4 kids was unusual. As with any "overcrowded" situation, strife was aplenty and fights, both of the cat and dog variety, were commonplace. Oh, you should have seen the glorious bloodbaths in our household. It was straight out of a scene from Spartacus, really. For the record, we've grown past that hair-pulling, name-calling stage of our lives.

So, anyways, we like Crystal Jade Golden Palace for its exquisite food and gorgeous sexy ambience. Besides, it always seems less crowded than Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck right at the other end of Paragon. Reservations are seldom a necessity here, which is great for last-minute dinner plans. In our family, places that do not require reservations are a near requisite because all of our planning takes place at the last minute.

The Sauteed Beef Fillet with Tea Plant Mushrooms ($28) was slightly spiced up with coloured peppers. We liked the scrumptious tender beef.

The Stewed Seafood with Beancurd in Casserole ($28) was also another hit. The seafood was fresh and sweet, contrasting with the clean and clear taste of the beancurd.

The Braised Assorted Vegetable with Bamboo Pith ($26) was a nice mesh-up of different textures. From the crunchy baby corn to the chewy wood fungus and soft mushrooms, everything just married nicely by the lusciously rich oyster sauce gravy.

I love being able to eat roasted pork for dinner. There's something just so indulgent about clogging up your arteries with fat like that. We opted for roasted duck and pork in our order for the BBQ Combination ($28).

Now that Oversea Restaurant is closed down, Crystal Jade's Roasted Duck makes for a worthy contender for the title of "best roasted duck ever". The skin was paper crisp, the meat was soft and juicy, and it was packed with flavour.

The Roasted Pork was no less awesome. A thick crusty top, with salty meat and sinfully fatty layers that will leave you running to confession. Totally addictive. As Pringles said: you can't stop at one!

The Fried Assorted Grain Rice with Fresh Shrimp ($24) was a brilliant way to introduce brown rice to the diet. It was uncompromising on flavour despite being loaded with greens (juicy corn kernels, diced melon, sweet pumpkin) and only using the whites of eggs. This was delicious in a seemingly unhealthy way. Even vegetable-averse children would like this. My 17 month old nephew certainly lapped this up!

Clockwise from left: The Sauteed Chicken Fillet with Cashew Nut ($22) was heady and robust, with smooth succulent chicken chunks brushed with a stickily sweet and peppery marinade; The rich broth of the Pomfret Fillet Congee ($13) was slurpilicious, while the fish plump and fresh; We loved the oozy egg white drop gravy slathered over the Fish Maw Mustard greens ($28).
