Eng Kee, Commonwealth

Back when I was asking people their go-to places for good "char bee hoon", I got directed to Eng Kee by a friend. This guy's a serious foodie, so if he says something's good, it's really good.

It wasn't that big of a surprise that this economic noodle stall is another one of those old-school places located in another one of those old HDB estates. The mature HDB estates are really the best in uncovering the best of hawker gems, with the added bonus of price points that seem to be stuck in the middle ages. A hulking plate of noodles with a slab of luncheon meat, fried egg and chicken wing cost about $2.50.

The best thing about this place is that I get to sleep in till late, because it's only open after noon. And stays open till late at night! Many economic noodle stalls (well, the good ones anyway) are sold out by late morning, so it's truly a rare breed of hawker that sells traditionally breakfast foods at atypically dinnertime.

Apparently, the star attraction which draws in the hordes of hungry customers come mealtimes, is the fried chicken wings. All the other toppings like fishcake, otak, luncheon meat, fried egg and sauteed cabbage take a backseat to the Chinese-style, Ikea-esque, golden-hued fried chicken wings reminiscent of memorably awesome canteen food. I'm passing on a word of advice given to me: you'll do well to order some of the wings to takeaway because these babies make for a totally addictive snack while couch surfing. (here's where I confess that the Hubs and I tookaway 5 wings each!)

The sambal here is blended with a sweet sauce (the kind they use to accompany yong tau foo), for a smoother, sweeter finish. However, the noodles are delicious on their own, well fried and very tasty so minimal additional seasoning is needed. The luncheon meat is generically decent, but the eggs were rubbery, so skip that.

The stall facade for reference.
