Hansang Korean Family Restaurant, Novena Square 2

Of all the Korean restaurants in Novena Square 2's Little Korea, Hansang is possibly the most popular. While they may not serve the most refined or authentic of Korean fare, their stuff is unfussy, homestyled and affordably value-for-money. Which probably explains their longevity and brisk business.

In addition, service here is like a well-oiled production line: efficient and speedy. We barely sat our butts down before the banchan and trio of amuse bouche arrived onto our tables.

The potato mash, part 1 of the amuse bouche, served chilled and refreshing.

Seasoned parboiled black beans, a little salty, a little piquant.

Spiced anchovies with groundnuts that were addictively good. So good I gobbled up the Hubs' share.

The Kimchi Fish Cake was bouncy and fresh with a little chilli kick.

Both the Hubs and I aren't fans of eggplant, so we left this mushy concoction alone.

The seasoned spring onions were decent. Clean and clear, with a mild spice to brighten the flavours.

The Kimchi was a bit generic and forgettable. This was probably straight out of those supermarket packets.

The Fruit Salad in a rich salad sauce. We just scrapped the cloying sauce off.

No self-respecting Korean would go to a restaurant and not order red meat and the Hubs is no different (he grew up eating steak everyday. yes, you heard right. EVERYDAY). The Beef Bulgogi ($16) here was pretty good, tender and juicy, with raw onions cutting through the rich sweetness of the bulgogi marinade.

We thought the Samgye-tang ($23), chicken ginseng soup, was great the other time we dined here so we ordered it again. This was great on a rainy day, delicate and rich with the flavour of chicken bones and the earthiness of ginseng enriching the soul and tummy.

Salt and pickled radish to lend extra flavour for the sodium-heads.

The broth was served alongside steamed rice, enlivened by root vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes.
