Geylang Claypot Rice is yet another one of Beeps' recommendation that we've been wanting to try for a while now. She really likes the claypot rice here, and called it one of the best claypot rice around. Although the rice is the order of the day, there's a smattering of cze char dishes that she'd also said not to miss out on.
Every claypot rice is only cooked upon order, so waits for your food can take up to an hour and a half during peak periods. A tip is to call ahead before going down (the staff will let you know when your rice will be ready), and you can time your arrival for dinner.
For a no-frills eatery (that's inundated with houseflies, so you'll find yourself swatting at them pesky winged-things), Geylang Claypot Rice is, very surprisingly, high-tech. Here, orders are all taken through touchscreen pads which are all synced with one another, and instructions are relayed wirelessly to the kitchen to ensure seamless service.
The Claypot Rice ($14 for 2 pax) arrives adorned with succulent soy chicken chunks, chewy Chinese sausage slices, salted fish and leafy greens on a bed of fluffy, fragrantly smoky rice and a crisped bottom.
If dining in, you get to drizzle as much thick dark soy as you like. We went a little overboard and our rice ended up so inky we could hardly make out what we were eating.
Another tip is to visit on weekends because that's when they offer this awesomesauce weekend-only dish of Lotus Leaf Pork ($14) a deeply aromatic leaf-swaddled hunk of chopstick-tender pork ribs, chicken feet (which we don't eat), mushy chestnuts and braised mushrooms.
The plain-Jane-looking Tofu with Prawns ($12 for small) turned out comforting and charmingly homestyled. Smooth egg tofu was paired with fresh bouncy prawns and doused in a mellow egg-drop gravy.
The French Beans with Shrimps ($8 for small) boasted great wok hei and a lovely crunch.
