La Strada

La Strada is back! One of our all-time favourite Italian restaurants is back in business! You know that feeling of elation you get when a really hot babe breaks up with her boyfriend and is back out on the open market again? Yup, that's exactly how I felt when I heard that La Strada reopened its doors. Even if La Strada has reincarnated as a very much more casual trattoria and downsized its menu and premises, I'll take a cramped and rustic-looking La Strada over no La Strada any day!

Service that weekday night had a bit of a hiccup though, as we, and a couple of other tables, were left waiting for approximately half an hour for our food. Apparently, the kitchen had "technical issues". We suspect something caught on fire. Or else, someone blew something up. Either way, the fact that the Hubs still felt that the food was worth the 30-minute-long wait says volumes about how good La Strada is. In any case, the wait staff were accommodating, chirpily welcoming and sincerely apologetic about the kitchen running into a snag.

We marked our return to La Strada with the Funghi Portobello Fritti ($18), a more refined version of Peperoni's portobello appetizer, layered with truffled mushroom tapenade, sublimely perfect eggs sunny side up, crisp bacon and arugula.

A must-order whenever we dine at La Strada, the Chitarra alla Carbonara ($28) with homemade 'guitar string' pasta tossed in a sumptuous truffle butter sauce, laced with parmesan and crispy ham, and centered around an exquisite egg confit. This, in our view, is the best carbonara in the whole of Singapore.

An off-menu item to accommodate vegetarians, the Mushroom Risotto ($26) was freckled with zucchini and a slew of wild mushrooms for a variance in texture with the al dente rice. We loved the stock base for this, it tempered the acidity of a dry red wine and full-bodied sweetness of vegetable broth.
