Saffron, Banyan Tree Koh Samui

Saffron is a constant of the Banyan Tree group - just about every one of its hotels under the luxury hotel brand has a resident Saffron Restaurant. We were recently in Koh Samui and checked out Saffron at Banyan Tree for a nice dinner at the lovely restaurant.

Perched on a cliff on the furthest end of the beach resort, Saffron's seaviews are spectacular. Ask for the corner table on the balcony, this are by far the most romantic. Coupled with excellent Thai food, sublime cocktails and the sounds of the crashing waves, this is one date-night spot you don't want to miss.

For starters, we had the complimentary rice crackers and saffron-hued Thai-herbed biscuit films, served with a trio of dips, a mildly spicy green chilli eggplant, piquant chicken tomato, and creamy chicken & shrimp simmered in coconut milk.

This was quickly followed by an amuse bouche of Grilled Tuna with brown sauce and tangy fruit salad.

The Goong Sarong Beua Thod (THB490/S$19), of crispy rice noodle-wrapped prawns was paired with wild pepper leaf tempura and mango chilli sauce.

A must-try, the Tom Saeb (THB490/S$19), was a heady Thai herbed beef soup chunked with braised Australian beef short rib that was meltingly tender. This is very spicy, so if you can't take the heat, be sure to ask for the watered down version.

The Gai Yang Khreuang Gaeng (THB680/S$27), of succulent curried chicken imbued with the smoky char of the barbecue was slathered in a peanut curry, and topped with a refreshing papaya salad for contrast.

A great vegetarian option, the Phad Krapow Hed Ruam Yang (THB420/S$17) of king oyster, straw, and shimeiji mushrooms wok-fried with hot basil and chilli was topped with battered deep-fried enoki straws.

A quartet of flavoured rice - Saffron, Basil, Organic Brown and Coconut Ginger, was served alongside any mains, fantastic accompaniments to the curries and gravies.

We loved the Thai-inspired cocktails here, like the Pineapple & Kaffir Mojito (THB350/S$14) a sunny mix of rum with lime juice, pineapple juice, mint leaves, and kaffir lime leaves; and the Tom Kha (THB350/S$14) a spicy blend of malibu with coconut cream, lime, lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and red chilli.

A signature dessert here and a Thai classic, the Khao Niew Mamuang & I-Tim Kathi (THB380/S$15) of fresh sweet juicy mangoes, with moist sticky rice, a deep-fried mango sticky rice roll and coconut ice-cream was scrumptious. Sweet but balanced.

Complimentary petit fours to finish off the wonderful meal.

Isn't this just the best table in the house??
